Update:

I took a shot on 35mm at the same time I took this shot on my iPhone. After the requisite delay to finish the roll, process, and scan the film, here’s that version of the shot straight from camera.

#122 of 366 – tree by the sea

A portion of the trunk of a Norfolk pine by the beach.

Interesting historical fact – Norfolk pines were planted along the coast by early explorers as they were perfectly suited to being used as ships masts. If a mast was damaged at sea or getting too long in the tooth, the captain could order his motley crew to cut down one of the pines along the coast, strip it, and mount it on the ship. Pointless fact concluded…

#92 of 366 – wine and sea

Today started with a jaunt through wine country, stopping and sipping the various vinos available. With so many vineyards down this end of the world there’s a bit of competition to entice buyers onto their grounds. Art installations, galleries, children’s playground, and exquisite architecture all feature prominently, but it’s the grapes that people come here for.

After imbibing the local wine we headed towards the coast to check out the storm heading inland over the ocean. On the way we passed by this paddock where the sun was punching through a couple of clouds and lighting up a lone tree.

Soon we made it to the coast where the storm had yet to hit. Some kite surfers were making the most of the large waves, but in my haste to capture the clouds and the water I ended up making them look like ants. I could have cropped the picture to make them bigger but in my mind the storm and sea make a much better subject.

Back to the city tomorrow. I was hoping to get up early and get some nice sunrise shots but I’m thinking laziness and a warm bed are going to prevent that from happening. Still, I’m gonna miss all the photo opportunities down here.
